Buckingham also made a special appearance on the American Idol finale on Sunday, May 23, 2021, when he joined contestant Cassandra Coleman for a duet performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.”

Coleman did not win the competition. That went to singer-guitarist Chayce Beckham. Buckingham sang and played guitar. Scroll down to see their performance below.

The long-running talent series just completed its fourth season on ABC TV, after 15 seasons on FOX, where the program originated in 2002. Idol won its time slot for the season and it’s expected that it will be renewed for a 20th campaign.

The series debut on June 11, 2002, as a summer replacement and proved to be a ratings juggernaut. The show continued on FOX until it was cancelled in 2016. After a two-year hiatus, it was picked up by ABC.

Buckingham and Lionel Richie share a light moment behind the scenes at Idol

Buckingham shared a photo of himself with Lionel Richie, who served as one of this season’s judges, noting “Thanks to Lionel, Cassandra and all the team at #AmericanIdol. So great to be on stage again!”

Buckingham had planned a brief solo comeback tour of sorts in 2020. The concerts had originally been scheduled for spring with a dozen dates planned for April and May. In April, amidst the pandemic, many of them were moved to the summer. However, on June 11, all of the dates were officially canceled.

Buckingham had a highly visible parting from Fleetwood Mac in 2018. The band completed a tour with two replacements – the Heartbreakers’ lead guitarist Mike Campbell, and longtime Split Enz/Crowded House guitarist-vocalist Neil Finn. Buckingham spent much of his time in 2018 organizing an anthology and performing on a solo tour.
