David Coverdale, the dynamic frontman for such classic rock favorites as Whitesnake and Deep Purple, announced his retirement today (Nov. 13, 2025). The acclaimed performer, 74, shared the news on a video via YouTube that was posted on Whitesnake’s various social media platforms.

“After 50 years-plus of an incredible journey with you,” he said, “with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page — the last few years it has been very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock ‘n’ roll platform shoes and my skintight jeans.” He added, “It’s time for me to call it a day. I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey: all the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing. But it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement, and I hope you can appreciate that.”

The brief announcement was followed with video highlights of his career set to the Whitesnake song, “Fare Thee Well.”

Coverdale formed the band in 1978 with guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody, bassist Neil Murray, drummer Dave Dowie and touring keyboardist Brian Johnston. Through an evolving lineup, they earned success with powerful hard rock and chart-topping power ballads such as the anthemic hits “Here I Go Again,” “Still of the Night,” “Fool for Your Loving” and “Is This Love.”

When vocalist Ian Gillan left Deep Purple, Coverdale auditioned to replace him and earned the role in 1973. He remained until 1976 when the band broke up. After a brief solo career, Coverdale formed Whitesnake. After achieving steady success, the group became international superstars with their 1987 self-titled album.

During a break, Coverdale teamed with Jimmy Page for a successful collaborative album in 1993.

Coverdale, born on Sept. 22, 1951, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Deep Purple.
