The nominations for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards were announced today (Nov. 28) and, as the trend as been for many years, classic rock artists–even those with new recordings–were largely ignored. Several artists who died in the past year were recognized in various categories. Among the classic rock artists with nominations:
Gregg Allman‘s posthumous release, Southern Blood, earned two nominations: Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song for “My Only True Friend”;
Bob Dylan for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for his three-record set of covers, Triplicate;
The Rolling Stones‘ Blue & Lonesome was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album;
Leonard Cohen received two nominations for his You Want It Darker album: Best Rock Performance for the title track and Best American Roots Performance for “Steer Your Way”;
The Grateful Dead earned two: Best Boxed Package for May 1977: Get Shown the Light and Best Music Film for their Long Strange Trip documentary.
Metallica received nominations for Best Rock Album for Hardwired…To Self-Destruct and Best Rock Song for “Atlas Rise”;
Foo Fighters earned two nominations for “Run” for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song;
Chris Cornell got a posthumous nomination for The Promise.
Others: Bruce Springsteen was nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for Born to Run, Randy Newman received a Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals nomination for “Putin” from Dark Matter, Roger Waters‘ Is This the Life We Really Want received a Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical nomination, Glen Campbell earned a Best American Roots Performance nod for “Arkansas Farmboy” from his Adios album.
Besides the Stones, the Best Traditional Blues Album category also includes Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio, Best Contemporary Blues Album includes Tedeschi Trucks Band for Live From the Fox Oakland, and Cat Stevens received a Best Folk Album nomination for The Laughing Apple.
