June 24, 2022: Paul McCartney Plays Club Gig Prior to Glastonbury
by Best Classic Bands StaffPaul McCartney played a club gig on June 24, 2022, one day before his much ballyhooed return to the Glastonbury Festival. The intimate concert, announced just one day in advance, took place at the Cheese and Grain in the town of Frome. The 800-person, standing-only capacity venue is a former farm produce warehouse that was converted into a concert venue in 1997.
Tickets for the performance at just £25 each [= $30.76] were available at the box office only and were limited to two per person. Not surprisingly, it sold-out within minutes.
Sadly if you weren’t there in minutes you were disappointed in the long and windy queue for surprise tickets to see Sir Paul McCartney play a one off warm up gig at Frome’s Cheese & Grain. You had to be there early. #Frome#Nubit#beatle pic.twitter.com/5txopANJVb

McCartney’s website indicated that the June 24 concert wouldn’t be his normal set. It “should be an afternoon full of wonderful surprises.” See the setlist below.
Many without tickets waited outside the venue just to get a glimpse of the legend who had turned 80 years old on June 18.

Fans weren’t allowed to film or photograph the concert. Phones were required to be placed inside a secure bag provided by the event staff. The Cheese and Grain performance was filmed for future use by McCartney’s production company.
Among the boldfaced names said to be in attendance were Olivia Harrison, Brian Johnson, and pop star Olivia Rodrigo.

His headlining performance at Glastonbury took place on Saturday, June 25. The set, scheduled to run from 9:30 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. local time on the Pyramid Stage, was broadcast on BBC One beginning at 10:30 p.m. It was available for streaming, but only in the U.K.
Late in that set, he was joined by Bruce Springsteen for two songs, who then returned to close the show with another veteran rocker.
McCartney’s oft-bootlegged, One Hand Clapping, was recorded live in the studio in 1974. It finally received an official release on June 14, 2024, and is available in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here. And The McCartney Legacy Volume 2, from a noted Beatles author, is coming later this year. It’s available for pre-order in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here.
