Looks like a new White Album is in town. In keeping with their trend of releasing color-categorized LPs – so far, they’ve got blue, green and red under their belt – rock band Weezer released the self-titled Weezer, also known as The White Album, on April 1st. The record has been a swift success, with many critics describing it as the group’s best material in 15 years.
Their 10th record is what frontman Rivers Cuomo describes as a “beach album,” inspired by his love of The Beach Boys and based heavily on his experiences “hanging around the Westside of Los Angeles… with people in Venice and Santa Monica, the beach, the Hare Krishnas, the Sikh on roller blades with the guitar, girls on Tinder within a four-mile radius, seeing other bands, the kids from La Sera,” according to Pitchfork. Single “King of the World” explores celebrity life and Cuomo’s relationship with his wife, while catchy power pop tune “Do You Wanna Get High?” addresses his addiction to prescription pills more than a decade ago. “Thank God for Girls” became the most-added song of the week on alternative radio stations in the United States just two days after its radio debut.
Weezer released their self-titled, triple-platinum debut studio album (also known as The Blue Album) in 1994, and quickly made a name for themselves with memorable music videos for songs like “Buddy Holly,” “Undone – The Sweater Song” and “Say It Ain’t So.” Darker follow-up Pinkerton was a commercial flop that went on to achieve cult status and acclaim in later years, while 2001’s self-titled The Green Album brought them back into the limelight with fan favorites like “Hash Pipe” and “Island in the Sun.”
The White Album is available now via iTunes, Amazon or Google Play for only $7.99 for a limited time only. And in even more good news for fans, the band has scheduled a lengthy U.S. tour featuring some shared dates with Panic! At the Disco and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, wrapping up in California in August. Click here for tickets.
