The classic rock community certainly knows how to pay tribute to a fallen member. Almost immediately after the passing of Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister who died at his Los Angeles home on December 28, 2015, other rock icons took to social media to offer tributes and pay their respects.
Motörhead: We just want to say…thank you. Thank you for coming here and sharing with us…it means the world and Lemm would’ve been honored to know he had such an impact. Let’s keep sharing, keep talking, keep writing, keep sending photos, just keep on doing what we need to do…again, thank you all.
Metallica: Lemmy, you are one of the primary reasons this band exists. We are forever grateful for all of your inspiration. Rest In Peace.
Endless Love & Respect,
Metallica
Foo Fighters: We’ve lost a friend & legend. My heart is broken. RIP Lemmy. Born To Lose, Lived To Win.
Iron Maiden: Lemmy, Rest In Peace… Loudly! The World has lost a unique character, they don’t build them like you anymore. But you played a great set. Our condolences to your family and friends and Motorheads everywhere. With much affection and respect. Nicko, Steve. Bruce, Janick, Dave & Adrian and Rod
Geddy Lee: “So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of fellow Bass man, Lemmy…of Motörhead and Hawkwind before that. He was a true original….who lived to rock….RIP Lemmy!” – Geddy Lee
Brian May: “RIP LEMMY
Words don’t come easy, especially when you know Lemmy would have laughed at us all trying to say dignified things about him being a hero…. … … Bri” (An extended tribute is on his site.)
ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons: “Just heard that we’ve lost Lemmy, a friend who upheld the rock ’n’ roll standard of the first order. The term “iconic” applies and it would certainly be to Lemmy. His single mindedness and dedication have long been a source of constant intrigue and we’re confident Lemmy’s enduring legacy will stand tall. Considering the ruckus he made during the life he led allows us to just leave with, ‘Rock on, Lem’”
Pat Travers: Wow, I’m very sad. I’ve just heard that one of my favorite artists has passed away. I met Lemmy Kilmister in NYC on 7th Ave across from Polygram’s (Universal now) headquarters in 1982. I was waiting to cross at the light when I heard someone yell out “Hey Pat!”, it was Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy guitarist) and he had Lemmy with him. Robbo introduced me to him and before Lemmy said anything he took out a little brown glass bottle and from that he poured out a long white line of powder from the tip of his finger to his wrist and stuck it under my nose. What was I to do? Talk about “peer pressure”. So I bravely snorted away and immediately thought my left eye was going to fall out.
I was playing Motorhead music for my son’s friends just the other night. They loved it! What’s not to like about Motorhead? So today…with much respect…for all of Moterhead’s fans, Lemmy’s family and friends…let’s rock out seriously with Motorhead…featuring Lemmy with his inimitable vocal style…”Sympathy For The Devil”. PT
Billy Idol: Lemmy RIP….
