Grateful Dead Music Coming to Off-Broadway Show

Red Roses, Green Gold, a new musical set to open Off-Broadway in New York City this fall, will feature the songs of the Grateful Dead. According to several online reports, the show will begin performances October 11 ahead of an October 29 opening at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

According to a notice on the show’s website, “Red Roses, Green Gold brings the music and lyrics of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter to the stage. This new musical set in 1920s Maryland tells the fantastical and comedic tale of Jackson Jones and his family of swindlers as they gamble their way to love and riches.”

The musical’s book is by Michael Norman Mann, with the primary music ad lyrics from th catalog of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Additional music is by former Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Mickey hart as well as musician Greg Anton.

Musical supervision and arrangements are by Jeff Chimenti (a member of Dead and Company since 2015), with direction and choreography by Rachel Klein.

The cast will include Brian Russell Carey (A Christmas Carol), Maggie Hollinbeck (Once First national tour), David Park (Matthew McConaughey vs. The Devil), Michael McCoy Reilly (Hoots & Hellmouth), Natalie Storrs (Sister Act first national tour), Debbie Christine Tjong (Howl at the Moon), Michael Viruet (Pitch Perfect) and Scott Wakefield (Ring of Fire).

The production, according to online reports, will feature music direction by Andy Peterson (More Than All The World), scenic design by Robert Andrew Kovach (The Anthem), costume design by Ásta Bennie Hostetter (The Wolves), lighting design by Jamie Roderick (That Bachelorette Show), sound design by M. Florian Staab (Curvy Widow) and projection design by Brad Peterson (Cats).

Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster beginning September 13 for American Express cardholders, September 20 for Audience Rewards members, and September 25 for the general public.

Jerry Garcia himself, who was a fan of the Broadway musical genre, performed an extended run of 18 shows at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York in 1987. Highlights were released in 2015 on a three-disc set, On Broadway: Act One – October 28th, 1987.
