The Los Angeles new wave sensations The Go-Go’s formally said bye-bye in 2016 with a brief summer tour. But they’re entitled to change their minds and it’s welcome news that they’ll be back onstage. The band played several 40th anniversary concerts, including three over the 4th of July holiday at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where they were re-joined by bandmate Kathy Valentine.

The Go-Go’s formed in 1978, rising out of the Los Angeles punk/new wave scene to become the most successful all-female musical group ever, thanks to songs like the #2 pop smash “We Got The Beat,” “Vacation” (#8), “Head Over Heels” (#11) and “Our Lips Are Sealed” (#20). They remain the only band of women who play their own instruments and write their own songs to top the Billboard charts, which they did with their 1981 debut Beauty and the Beat.

Head Over Heels also happens to be the name of a new musical “featuring the iconic songs of the Go-Go’s” and coming to Broadway in 2018. According to the show’s website, Head Over Heels “is the fearlessly fresh new musical comedy from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Next To Normal, American Idiot, Spring Awakening and Avenue Q.”

The production, to be directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, is described as: “Deliriously funny and sexy, a tantalizing odyssey wrought with mistaken identities, jealous lovers, romance and scandal. This lavishly quick witted new musical takes us on an extravagant journey where everything (and everyone) is not quite what it seems. What happens next?… Our lips are sealed!”

Head Over Heels began previews at New York’s Hudson Theatre on June 23. Its official opening night will be July 26. Among the show’s producers is actress Gwyneth Paltrow, her debut in that role.

The jukebox musical includes the group’s songs “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips are Sealed,” “Cool Jerk,” “Vacation” and, of course, “Head Over Heels,” plus Belinda Carlisle solo hits “Mad About You” and “Heaven is a Place on Earth.”

In a statement, the Go-Go’s said: “If you told us 30 years ago that our songs were going to be in a musical, we’d have said ‘Of course they’ll be on Broadway!’ None of us would have really believed it though — what a crazy idea! Yet here we are, with HEAD OVER HEELS – a celebration of love in all its forms, joyful, fun and full of heart, driven by the songs that for decades have been making people jump from their seats and dance.”

On the subject of their 2016 not-so-final tour, the Go-Go’s had slated a farewell “Happily Ever After” tour in 2010 but had to cancel when guitarist Jane Wiedlin had a hiking accident and required surgery for a knee injury.

The 2016 “Go-Go’s Farewell Tour” featured founders Wiedlin, singer Carlisle, guitarist Charlotte Caffey and drummer Gina Schock. Bass guitarist Valentine had parted ways with the band in 2013.
