The Who began their farewell tour last night (August 16, 2025) with the first of 17 North American shows. The career-spanning setlist at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla. was dominated by songs from their most fertile recording era, namely, 1971’s Who’s Next, and from the double album that followed, 1973’s Quadrophenia. That period ably showcased Pete Townshend’s visionary songwriting that was well-suited for the powerhouse British foursome. Of course, only Townshend, who turned 80 on May 19, and Roger Daltrey, 81, remain. The band’s John Entwistle and Keith Moon are long gone.

“Pete’s still playing great guitar,” said Daltrey when the tour was announced at a May 8 press conference. “And the music still has such vitality. We’re not going to please the [entire] audience. [But] they’ve met their wives and husbands [at our concerts] and are now taking their grandchildren.”

The band had a messy “divorce” with their longtime drummer, Zak Starkey. He’s replaced on this tour by Scott Devours.

It’s said that this performance of “Going Mobile” was its concert debut. (Daltrey has sung it many times at his solo concerts.) Townshend sings lead on the recorded version; however, on this occasion, his brother, Simon Townshend did so.

If there’s a way to see whether Daltrey’s vocals can still soar, it’s with “Love, Reign O’er Me.”

The concert appropriately concluded with “The Song Is Over.”

Tickets for the tour are available here. Townshend and Daltrey have yet to commit to dates beyond this North American run.
