Jan. 16, 2016: Springsteen Covers Bowie as Tour Opens
by Best Classic Bands StaffWhen Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their massive anniversary tour for The River in 2016, it was less than one week after the death of David Bowie. Following the 28-song main set at the January 16, 2016, opening concert at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn., the band paid tribute to the legend.
As they came back on stage for their encore, The Boss said: “I don’t know if people know it, but he supported our music way, way, way back in the very beginning in 1973. I visited him in Philly while he was making the Young Americans record. He was a big supporter of ours. We’re thinking of him.”
Watch the band perform a spirited version of “Rebel Rebel”
The previous October 17, Springsteen celebrated the 35th anniversary of The River – the album that earned him his first #1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 and brought us the classic rock song “Hungry Heart.” The 4-CD, 3-DVD box set is packed with concert footage, unreleased outtakes and a documentary that explores his experience writing and recording the album. Jump into a conversationGreat Showman for sure. Concerts are always fun
That is quite a set list. There is a greyhound bus that goes from Asbury to Philly. Its hard to imagine the Boss on board but it was 1973.
