When The Who played their 1982 tour, it was entirely in North America apart from two warm-up dates at the Birmingham NEC in England. The tour, promoting the band’s album, It’s Hard, released earlier that year, proved to be their last to feature Kenney Jones, who had replaced the late Keith Moon on drums in 1978. The Who—Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle—performed at Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY, on October 13, 1982, with The Clash opening. An audio souvenir of the full concert arrived via Universal Music and Mercury Studios on March 1, 2024, as a softpak 2-CD set [available in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here] as well as a 3-LP set in gatefold jacket [in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here]. (A Blu-ray is available here.)
The set list included a number of tracks from It’s Hard, some of which the band would only play live on this tour. The Who wouldn’t tour again until 1989. The show also featured such classic rock favorites as “Pinball Wizard,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Generation,” “Substitute,” “Who Are You,” “I Can’t Explain,” “Baba O’Riley,” and more. Watch and listen to many of the tracks below.

Jump into a conversationRemember them at Toronto Joe Jackson led off to a unfortunate bad reception then The Who came on and hang on!!…what concert it was!!
That was October 9 1982 at Exhibition Stadium. It was disgusting how the crowd treated Joe Jackson. The bassist was hit in the head by a beer bottle!
Sounds like a typical fan of the Who. Hope Graham Maby was OK. He’s a true gentleman , who I met once.
Saw this tour in Buffalo with the Clash. I wish this show was recorded as well. It had the infamous Love reign over me where Roger stopped at the beginning because it started to lightly rain and said. “ not even F’ing Mick Jagger can do that “ Epic.
Pete Townshend had a very bad hair day everyday on that tour!
The Clash were preceded by David Johansen. I was there and was actually more interested in both Johansen and The Clash.
Clearly, no human being could ever replace Moonie. Just not possible. And the pressure on Kenney was off the charts. But all these years later and hearing these live recordings now, he sounds like a better fit than I was ever willing to give him credit for. The studio LPs have aged nicely, and the band sounds very good here.
Anybody from the Small Faces was OK to fill in for Moonie with me…but, I must admit, Zak Starkey was/is even better ~
It is odd that “Athena” was not included on this album. I’m almost certain they did the song at the Shea show……so, why was it not included? Anyone know??
They played Athena on the 1st night at Shea (Oct.12). I know because I was there.
They did not play on this 2nd night at Shea (Oct.13).
