A new collection focusing on covers of classic early tracks by Bob Dylan, is being released by the Strawberry imprint of Cherry Red Records. I Shall Be Released: Covers of Bob Dylan 1963-1970 arrives July 25, 2025. The 3-CD set of 63 tracks is available for pre-order in the U.S. here. It will also be available in the U.K. here.

The collection covers the era when Dylan’s sound took in folk, blues, rock ‘n’ roll, country, psychedelia, and much more, and artists from those genres, with many surprising choices, cherry-picked tracks often with unique results. They include the Hollies’ performance of “The Times They Are a Changin’,” Cher’s recording of “Masters of War” and Harry Nilsson doing “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”

Others include Johnny Winter performing “Highway 61 Revisited,” the Association’s recording of “One Too Many Mornings” and bubblegum act the 1910 Fruitgum Company’s “The Mighty Quinn.”

Others represented include Faces, Al Stewart, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash and Al Kooper.

From the May announcement: In America, The Byrds took Dylan’s songs and sprinkled some jingle-jangle on them to essentially invent folk rock. In the U.K. Dylan’s songs would prove pivotal in the development of British folk rock with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and Sandy Denny, all taking their cues from his lead.

But folk is just one stop on the meandering musical ride we have here with bluegrass, ska, hard rock, and pop all featuring. The vast array of musical styles that populate this compilation not only illustrate the strength of the compositional skills of Dylan but also provide an engaging and eclectic listening experience that will appeal to fans of Bob in particular as well as those who like popular music in general.
