Bass player Kasim Sulton will once again be celebrating his longtime association with the ground-breaking progressive rock band Utopia by performing a limited number of shows, consisting entirely of their music, with a full band. Billed as “Kasim Sulton’s Utopia,” the February and March 2020 shows will span the 10 albums he appears on, including deep cuts as well as many more familiar songs.
“My career began with Utopia,” says Sulton in the announcement. “I can’t think of a better way to honor my work with Todd, Roger, and Willie than to do a handful of shows that celebrate the special and unique music we created together.”
Utopia was initially formed in 1973 with somewhat of a fluid membership, and by mid-1976 settled into a stable quartet of Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals), Sulton (bass, vocals), Roger Powell (keyboards, vocals), and Willie Wilcox (drums, vocals). All four band members wrote, sang, produced, and even engineered material for the band. Sulton wrote and sang lead on Utopia’s biggest hit, “Set Me Free,” from their 1980 best-selling album, Adventures in Utopia, which peaked at #27 on the Billboard Album chart.
Utopia maintained a loyal fan following throughout the ’80s with their albums, concert performances, and videos that were shown on MTV in its early years. The group had a number of classic rock hits including “Caravan,” “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now,” and “Love In Action.” Following the release of Oblivion (1984) and POV (1985), Utopia called it quits; later reuniting briefly to tour in 1992 and putting out a live album, Redux ’92: Live in Japan, that same year.
Sulton’s band includes Jesse Gress (guitar, vocals), Gil Assayas (keyboards, vocals) and Andy Ascolese (drums, vocals).
