Bob Dylan Bootleg Series Vol 18 Due, ‘Through the Open Window 1956-1963’
by Best Classic Bands StaffThe earliest years and development of Bob Dylan’s career will be explored in the latest edition of his acclaimed Bootleg Series. Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series Vol 18: Through the Open Window 1956-1963, coming on October 31, 2025, via Legacy Recordings, tells the story of Dylan’s emergence and maturation as a songwriter and performer, from Minnesota to the Greenwich Village bohemia in the early 1960s. It includes rare Columbia Records outtakes, recordings made at club dates, in tiny informal gatherings, in friends’ apartments, and at jam sessions in long-gone musicians’ hangouts. The Deluxe edition on 8-CDs—featuring 139 tracks including 48 never-before released performances, as well as 38 “super-rare” cuts—is available for pre-order in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here; and as a highlights edition on 4-LPs or 2-CDs, available for pre-order in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here and here. All three editions are available in Canada here.
Listen to “Rock and Gravel (Solid Road),” recorded in 1962
The various editions include early stage and/or studio performances of such well known Dylan compositions as “Song to Woody,” “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “Girl From the North Country,” “Masters of War” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” The sets also feature rehearsals and stage collaborations with Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk, and others. The last two discs of the Deluxe edition consist of the unreleased complete recording of Dylan’s 1963 landmark show at Carnegie Hall, mixed from original tapes. It includes a hardcover book with extensive liner notes by Sean Wilentz and over 100 rare photographs.
