Squeeze’s new lineup, introduced on July 25, 2017

Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford continue to fill up their calendars, collectively as Squeeze. The band, which enjoyed a string of hit singles in the U.K., thanks to Difford and Tilbrook’s razor-sharp songwriting, have resumed a regular tour schedule in recent years.

On Aug. 30, they revealed more details of a new album, The Knowledge, which arrives Oct. 13 in the U.K. and Oct. 27 in the U.S. Difford also debuted the first single, “Innocence in Paradise,” during an interview with BBC Radio 2. Watch the video, released Oct. 5, below.

They recently announced changes to their band lineup. The new bassist is Yolanda Charles with Steve Smith on percussion. They join existing drummer Simon Hanson and keyboardist Stephen Large.

Squeeze began recording the new album in March, which will be their first since 2015’s Cradle to the GraveThe Knowledge CD can be pre-ordered here. The vinyl edition will be released on Nov. 10. (See the track listing below.)

Squeeze developed a strong American fan base thanks to regular touring and such well-crafted songs as “Tempted,” “Another Nail in My Heart,” “Goodbye Girl” and “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell).” It’s a rare Squeeze song that audience members don’t sing along to every lyric.

During the August 30 BBC Radio 2 interview, Difford, who has just published a memoir, Some Fantastic Place, talked about making the group’s 1981’s East Side Story album with producer Elvis Costello. “We just recorded song after song after song. He was like a teacher, lyrically. I was always in awe. Every time I brought a lyric in, I just couldn’t wait for him to read it.”

Of The Knowledge, Difford said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with it. It’s killer.”

As Tilbrook told Best Classic Bands in 2015, “People will always see – and that’s part of what this show is about – no matter who else is in Squeeze, it will always be me and Chris. I think they think of us as a single entity.”

Love Squeeze! Saw them years ago in Charlotte with Sting and it was the best concert, I’ll definitely drive to Durham to see them!
